No need to hear what Celine Dion has to say. It's all the same. We all dance. Jim walks down the street and hears "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" coming from a passing car. A smile comes to his face as he remembers dancing with his then girlfriend at his best friend's wedding. Not a bored face anywhere.

This memory is stopped by the sight of a middle aged man selling RIP Michael Jackson shirts from the back of his van. He sighs. Culture's thousands of layers upon us bearing down. Jim just went home and slept.

The overcast made everything glare. The pain behind my eyes is intense. I'm not really sure what time it is. This mass curled up behind my leg. Mouse, the cat. She means well but is usually in the way. I pry myself up.

I did decent things last night. I didn't get too much sleep. I really don't sleep too much anymore. I feel it's time for a new bed. But that doesn't matter now. Because I need to fall back asleep in this cot. I place a pillow on my head, but it reeks of cat. I have visions of rashes and blisters on my face when I wake up. The overcast glare is intense. Still have no idea what time it is.

A late start to the day happens as much was planned. But I don't feel the day is wasted. I usually do. But with good reason I was up watching TV at 4 in the morning. It's all paid programming at that time by the way. In my faded stupor, I needed those products.

I get some breakfast, feeling like I floated there. These old men are talking. One is smoking and one has a sweet pair of New Balance sneakers on. They seem fresher than me today.

My Dad used to travel a lot and would live on a plane. He would bring these thick novels with him. Most of them were about espionage, usually the newest Robert Ludlum, favorite author. After having a conversation with my Mom this morning, I realized that my knowledge of the economic crisis was not as good as I once thought. The economic downturn happened at about the time I starting listening to NPR all the time (instead of most the time). But that's another post. But their show Marketplace is excellent for people who have limited finance understanding (hey). But they get experts to explain things in ways you can all understand. So it was nice when I found this on the daily run of blogs...

I actually played basketball for 3 hours yesterday and felt like I wasn't going to die for once. I just need to keep playing every week. I used to play after not playing for a while and still be able to do a little. What ever tiny bit of skill I did have is going away. I need to work on it again. 100 shots a day like I used to do during the summers of high school. I hope to kick the smoking bug soon and be able to wake up in the morning with out any fluid coming out of my lungs. Gross but true.

First of all, who knew that races had their own water coalitions? I did. I found this tidbit over at the ever informative Carlsbadistan. Seems that the California Latino Water Coalition endorses Poseidon Resources desalination projects set to be built here in Carlsbad. I understand. They want to make sure that our large Mexican population has access to the water from this clean new way of making salt water drinkable. Some residents here are still opposed and Poseidon's pitch does seem good. Maybe too good. We'll have to see. Their is no stopping it as we go into Spring with a high chance of water rationing. If your still not convinced, then look who is on the panel with an endorsement: None other than Latin comedy hero Paul Rodriguez! I'm convinced.

Thanks to this economic downturn, my hours have been slashed and my income halved. This has led me back to craigslist in a attempt to supplement my life with a little more cash, while keeping my benefits I have to wiggle a job in the hardest job landscape in 60 years. I have to find one that fits around my crummy set schedule I have now that takes up the middle of the day. Ruining any shot of a morning and evening shift. What are my options? Way, way early. Or way way late. We will see how it goes. I'm lucky that I don't have:

2)kids
3)mortgage

to pay. Going to ride it out. Or I will be forced to look for a full time job.

I don't know how I feel about Obama in this new media age. The last few years has seen media technology explode in ways we've never thought of. Culture now is personal based, and with reality tv and such, pop culture is mixing with everything in a weird way. Obama's only been President for a month, but it's felt like a month. Maybe it's just odd that their is nothing to stand against. At least something so obvious. The news coverage was nauseating during the election, and they have not let off the pedal. Furthermore, it's odd seeing people's tweet's on CNN. I don't watch the news to see what web users think. That's what message boards are for. The only time internet users should have time on national news is when they send pictures or first hand accounts (ex: Mumbai attacks) That's a great use of internet based programming. We can't escape the grib of mainstream culture. Working within it. Take what they give you and try not to have them turn your brain to mush like Alec Baldwin said during the Super Bowl.

Oh I guess I have to add media too right. That's what the good ones do right? Oh this Internet 2.0 is confusing....

So tomorrow is the inauguration and many seem excited. Last November feels like forever ago, and every sector of government and business is in limbo as to future decisions. We will see what happens. What happened that Tuesday in November was a very historic date that was frankly very emotional at the end. I think it was the combination of knowing GW would be gone very soon and that enough American's didn't really care that a Black dude was going to the White House. The ladder says something. Reality checked back in later that week and we are reminded everyday how much deep you know what were in. What can you do? What can we do? The fastest change you can do is improving the communities around you. It's the most direct change that can be done. Your personal politics and actions are most immediate for results. Just hope you elect someone who points things in the right direction.

Desalination of ocean water for drinking is a pretty basic concept with a complicated procedure to execute. The largest desalination planet on the Western Hemisphere will most likely be built in Carlsbad sometime next year. Poseidon Resources is the company that will undertake the construction. They got preliminary approval in August and today basically got the go ahead in a California Coastal Commission meeting today. 38 acres of wetlands will be destroyed to make way for this. To off set the environmental impact, Poseidon will create another 38 acres somewhere else. A nice thought. But studies have shown that 68 acres of wetlands are needed to off set the plant's impact. They have plans for everything associated with the plant, but no area to create wetlands.

The California Coastal Commission didn't seem to mind. If the company wants to show that their not full of shit, they should announce a place set aside for wetland conversion BEFORE they break ground on their plant. As well as increase the number of acreage. If you want to sent a letter to the CCC ensuring that Poseidon upholds it's end click here.

I expressed my love of Youtube remixes of..well basically anything. Give someone a piece of footage and they'll put it to some sort of beat and make the person jerk around in funny movements. Hardcore, disco,rap, whatever. Well today I had a find that reinforced my surreal confusion to our hyper-cultural world.

I watch some late night television. Probably more than I'd like to admit. Months ago their appeared this guy named Vince. With a headphone mic headset and a rag that could soak up all the water on your boat if it sprung a leak in the middle of the ocean. Why was he wearing a headset if he is doing a commercial for TV? Those people at the end of the commercial sure loved it. Then it spread. Like wildfire in the back country everyone was talking about Shamwow. You were making jokes with your friends. Shows whose names escape me at this moment were tapping into this phenomenon. Like any short piece of media that goes "viral", the remixers will leave their stamp. You've gotten 15 minutes when you have a remix.

I _did_ listen carefully--that's how I picked up on it in the first place. And no, the guitar and bass are forced to slow right down as soon as the drums kick in. I've heard the same thing on Hendrix live stuff.

Anyway, whatever grooves ya. But around here, "the contrast between the fast guitar and the mid tempo drums" would demand more rehearsal before going to tape. Often it means the difference between selling 1,000 copies and 100,000 copies.

A lot of fans appreciate the rawness. I know what you're saying; my band sounds a lot like these girls. But I love those little details, where you can tell they said, "screw it, this is rock 'n' roll." So I see what you're saying, but it depends on how "corporate" you are. I hope I can experience a tenth of these girls' success!

Nah, I don't think rock'n'roll allows you to be unrehearsed and unable to stick to a tempo.

I guess audiences are more discerning where I am, 'cause a band that can't keep a beat from the get-go isn't gonna be able to compete here.

And if I start a song at 130 BPM and the drummer immediately slows to 120, I'd have a talk with that drummer or look for another.

Professionalism and ability have NOTHING to do with being "corporate," sheeeeeesh. Saying "screw it" is the lazy way out.

I can't say I agree, and the very fact that you used the word "compete" tells me that we're on very different sides of the rock 'n' roll equation. Sonic Youth knew nothing when they started. Last night our beloved Pub was taken over by Skatercumhipster cokehead types. You must of thought someone put horse laxative in the beer because everyone in the bathroom took 5 minutes or more every time. Anyways, a few of my favorite quotes from the night:

She lost someone close and faux hawk blurted something out. She comes back, they hug and exchange apologies. I flip through an original Ian Flemming novel. The music is still melancholy and everyone is drinking free wine except us.

The "DJ" makes fun of our after gig destination. Repeatedly.

"Sorry Jen but that guy is kind of a dick"

I say nothing because I'm the guest in this town.

"I'm only nice with him because he DJ's for free and gets us gigs. I agree with you, he is a huge dick"

I was told a wonderful story about my childhood a few hours ago by my mom. The conversation started with Denny's and eating late. Things moved to my story of meeting an really annoying prostitute at a Denny's at 3 a.m. years ago. My "Clown Prostitute" story got a laugh out of my mom and a squirm from my sister obviously weirded out about hearing a prostitute story in a family discussion. So that reminds my mom of a tasty nugget from our youth.

When I was 3 and my sister was just a few months old we were living in Milan Italy because my dad sold giant computers that filled up rooms the size of your living room. Apparently we lived in a very nice neighborhood that had a small park that I used to run around in. Well on the way to this park, was this house that was the de facto place to pick up prostitutes (full circle!) and you know, make use of their services. Everyone knew what this house was and what happened there. Everyone knew these business types were in our neighborhood for one thing. My mom told me of one lady in particular who would always greet us on our way to park. I guess their was no way to avoid your friendly neighborhood whore house.

My mom said she would greet her a few times a week until one day she stopped us one day to talk. Ever the cordial women (and never one to turn down a conversation with ANYONE) my mom talked to her for a few minutes. She asked the name of my sister and I, and commented on how nice looking kid we were.(Editor's Note: Very true) Then she gave me some coins for a little chocolate candy bar.

My mom said goodbye and I probably wasn't paying attention, excited about the chocolate bar prospects that lay ahead for me. At the park everyone asked my mom why she was talking to "that girl" as they put it (in Italian)

"She said hello and started talking to me, whats the big deal?"

"Don't you know she is a whore who waits their to be picked up everyday!"

They busted my mom's chops and she feels they looked down upon her after that. When she would sense attitude later on she told me she'd mutter a certain phrase under her breath in Italian. I ask:

"What does that phrase mean"

"It doesn't translate"

"Come on, it's gotta be something close in English"

"Well...Stupid Bitch is pretty close to it"

My mom is awesome.

There you have it. A prostitute gave me money for candy when I was three.
